X Ray Spex - Oh Bondage, Up Yours
This footage was shot by Don Letts at the Roxy in 1977, and included in his film The Punk Rock Movie. When I was 13 a friend of mine had a VHS copy of that film, and I borrowed it and made an audio cassette of the songs on it, using my dad’s stereo to dub from the audio track of our VCR to a cassette deck. This was the first version of “Oh Bondage, Up Yours” that I ever heard, and still the one I’m most used to. It’s the original lineup playing here, with Lora Logic on saxophone, before she left to form Essential Logic and was replaced by Rudi Thomson. This version is raw and not fully formed, but I’ve always loved its energy, and have never really gotten used to the more technically proficient studio version from the later single. That shit is good too, don’t get me wrong, but this is just awesome.
I grew up on The Punk Rock Movie and was going to post this just the other day. Thanks andrewtsks! I love this song and album.
Eater - No Brains
Perhaps the most memorable performance in The Punk Rock Movie, visually if not musically, is this one by teenage band Eater, whose drummer, 14 year old Dee Generate, was famously the youngest musician of the first wave punk bands. If I remember correctly, one of the members’ father was a butcher, which is how the band obtained the pig’s head that they first serenade and then attack during this video.
